To Kill a Mockingbird

Doc H loves to teach To Kill a Mockingbird for its literary value as well as its historical insights. Harper Lee is a very good writer; her imagery and the various vignettes within the novel are sometimes humorous, sometimes shocking, and sometimes poignant.
This book has been banned numerous times for its themes. The racial slurs are ugly, but they were a part of the era in this small Southern town during the Depression. They clearly show the ignorance of the speakers.
Doc H believes that the ugliness of some of the characters is offset by the example of nobility in other characters. She teaches this book through the lens of Micah 6:8.
Students will further develop their skills in writing an essay as they gather more insight into America's history, both positive and negative.
